HOB Filter

Got an old HOB filter that I'm thinking about using on my new planted tank as it'll be better hidden than having an internal filter in the tank. Problem is, I don't have any of the filter cartridges for it and don't fancy buying them and replacing them constantly. Would I get away with just cutting some sponge to size and adding it to the compartment along with some bio media?

Yep. I do this with the Aqueon HOB's that are made for cartridges.

Hi Jhncf,

I run just 'sponge' in all of my HOB filters. Actually what you want is open cell reticulated (filter) foam typically in the 20 ppi to 30 ppi range depending upon how 'fine' a filter you want.

75 Gallon, 2X55W AH Supply CF 8800K, 1XFluval F&P 2.0 48"/59W, 2X Marineland 350 Magnum filters; 45 Gallon Tall, 96Watt AH Supply CF 6700K, 1X Marineland 350 Magnum filter; 30 Gallon Long; Fluval F&P 2.0 36"/46W, Marineland C-220 filter; 20 Gallon, 1X26W AH Supply LED kit, Marineland C-160 filter; all with Press. CO2 and (Calcined) Montmorillonite Clay
