Submersable water pump clogging.

Also posted on "Aquarium Advice".

I'm using a Taam Rio 10HF as the return pump for my Aqua Medic T1000 diffuser. I can't keep it running. It clogs with plant waste very quickly. Does anyone have a suggestion for keep the junk out of this pump?

I've tried siting the pump in a plastic container and using a filter bag as a screen, neither one works..

Do a pretty thorough tank cleaning to remove most of the debris.
I put a coarse sponge over the intake of pumps, filters and power heads.
Then they seem to go longer before clogging, but if there is debris in the tank the current will bring it to the intake. That is part of the reason we want water movement. The water movement collects the debris, then it is our job to remove it.
