You should definitely call the AirGas location before you take your cylinder there. Not all AirGas locations do refills. The AirGas location near me won't refill; they will only swap. I didn't want to swap my shiny new aluminum cylinder for an old dirty one. Luckily I found a local gas & welding supply store that does refills.

Oh, and remember to bring a pair of gloves.... the cylinder is wicked cold when they give it back to you. No one warned me about that and I nearly froze my poor little handses.

There is a local gardening and home brewing store I go to that does an exchange for a flat $20 fee. I will be using their service once I get my hands on a 20# tank. Right now I am using a paintball tank and I get it filled at a local sporting good store called Dicks.

My local airgas only does swaps and it's outrageous compared to most of the prices listed here. I think I paid almost $50 for a 10# swap. Usually I go to a home brew supplier they're closer to $20-25 for the 10# swap. There is also a hydroponic store nearby that does swaps but they require you to have one of their cylinders which I don't.

I go to a local medical oxygen supplier that also has CO2 and other gases. It's about 14 bucks for a 5 #

I just exchange my 20# at Airgas for ~$25. I just make sure they have a decent enough Al tank before I pull the trigger. A steel tank on my oak floor is a nonstarter.

I go to my local fire supply store and fill my 10lbs tank for $22. I call the place before I go just make sure their technician is there. the tank is always ready before the front desk print out my receipt.

My local airgas does not refill and wanted to charge me $25.

Local home brewing store.

There's 3 different qualities of CO2, FYI - industrial, commercial, and medical.

Industrial is kept in regular old steel cylinders and has some impurities (I believe it's 92% pure CO2) and is used for welding and other industrial processes.

Commercial is in steel alloy cylinders used in the restaurant industry and the CO2 is of better purity (95% I believe).

Medical is the best (99%) and the cylinders have an inner lining of glass to maintain the purity.
