I have a spare 75W submersible penn plax heater and found something useful for it to do. My DIY CO2 doesn't react that fast in the winter since my house temp is about 62F and after putting the bottle in a bucket of warm water, result were amazing. Increased from 18 bubbles/min to 45 bpm. The bucket is 5 gallons, but I'm filling it with only 3 gallons of water. I want to keep the temperature at 72F.

By the 5W/gallon rule, a 75W heater should be used to heat 15 gallons, but I'm using it for 3. Plus there will be no circulation.

Simple question, are there problem using a heater in a volume of water far less than suggested plus w/o circulation?

Most heaters have a built in thermostat that automatically shuts off the heating element once the water comes up to temp. If your not sure throw a thermometer in the bucket to monitor the water temp for 24 hrs. Just make sure that the heater is submerged below the surface to the minimum reccomended water mark.

It does have a thermostat that turns it on and off. I'm more concerned if using a relatively strong heater for a small volume of water is bad. This is comparable to using a 4x96W ballast to run a 14W lamp, see what I mean? Regarding no circulation, will that matter?

It's not a problem so long as the heater cycles on and off. The only problem I could forsee would be if the thermostat on the heater didn't work the way its supposed to overheating the water. Because theres no circulation in the bucket the heater might cycle on and off more often ,but thats about it.

If you can submerse it, position it as low as possible in the bucket. That will create some circulation and reduce temperature layering (a little bit).

Mabey I will just put a airstone in it, that will at least create some circultation. Is there anything better forr 3 gallons?
