Thinking about purchasing a canister filter for 40b, need suggestions

Are there any out there that won't break the bank but offer good filtration and turnover rate?

Re: Thinking about purchasing a canister filter for 40b, need suggestions

To be more specific, I'd like a canister filter that will give me good enough flow so that i can remove my powerhead and obviously the two HOBs I'm already using to filter the tank lol.

I've been looking around and I've come across the Eheim Classic 2217. Will this achieve what i want?

That looks like its good. Might be too strong though. There is also cascade. I have had good luck with them. Check out cascade 1000 and 1200.

I just got an Eheim Classic 2217 for my 55G and it is awesome! I cannot believe I waited so long to get a canister. I definitely recommend it! I know you will have enough flow to be able to remove the powerhead , but I don't think it will be too much. Hopefully some more experienced Eheim owning members will chime in.

I run a Fluval FX5 on a 40b with a spraybar and it's perfect. $250 on e-bay

+1 on the rena , an xp3 will give you plenty of filtration and is an absolute work horse . You can pick them up from big Al's (this forums sponser) for less than $110 shipped if you use the coupon code.

2215 or 2217 - Spraybar on the side, no power head necessary

I have a Fluval 306 on my 40B. Good flow, enough to run as a single filter for that tank (I currently have a C4 HOB running with it).
