So my cleaning routines for my filters have never served me wrong, until recently when I had a semi-deadly ammonia spike after cleaning my filter. I donít fully clean the filter, because I know that you should not wash away the bio stars and other media that has good bacteria in them. What I the normal routine for cleaning a canister filter? I really do not want to change my routine, because it has worked until this one time. Any help would be great. Thank you.

What is your normal routine of cleaning your filters? You don't fully clean your filters... can you give more details? What do you do exactly? How often? What filter? Which media?

On my 100 gallon I have TWO filstar XP3's. I clean them alternately about once a month. I remove all the baskets and high pressure spray the foam pads to get all the gunk out. I then dump all the water out of the container. I then clean the impeller. I briefly rinse the media for about a couple of seconds to remove anything that built up. Thats it! On my 10 gallon and 15 gallon I have remove the cartridge that houses the ceramic media and rinse the floss out and put the media back in. Thats it.

Hope that helps!

See that's all that I do, and it has never served me wrong until recently. I had an ammonia spike that killed off a couple small tetras, but it must have come from something else. I just can't figure out what.

Matt,

Perhaps something fell into the tank?
