I bought a used 30 gallon breeder locally and it has lots of stains. I'm not sure what kind they are, but I tried to clean them with warm water, vinegar, and a last resort Everclear (lol).
Does anyone know how to get rid of these stains?
White vinegar didn't work. I went out and bought a Mr. Clean Original Magic Eraser and also did not work. I also tried to use Crown Muriatic acid with a rag and the eraser, but the stains won't budge. Am I supposed to let the acid soak or something?
If the acid didn't touch it then yea, the glass is probably etched. Gotta watch for that on used tanks. People let the water level drop below the trim and eventually the glass itself is dissolved enough to give it a permanent haze. At this point either use the tank or cut your losses. You can buy a powder that buffs out this haze but it's expensive and tedious to use. GL
Yeah, I've never witnessed it personally, but I've heard that aquariums can get etched. I think this is more prone to happen in alkaline environments, but not at all certain.
Sounds like it could make a great sump tank if you don't want to go to the trouble of trying to remove them. (and, with petco's semiregular $1/gallon sale, it's hard to justify too much effort for anything smaller then 60gallons or so...)
