Question about a tank...

One of my friend have a 29 gallon freshwater planted tank with only an undergravel filter. As far as I know, there is no real filter under it, just a pump to suck the water up from the bottom and pull it back up top. There's no filter medium in it. He have plants but low lighting (regular flourscent hood) and no air pump or other filters.

Is that really enough filtering/oxygen for the fish?

If there is gravel on top of the undergravel filter, then the gravel acts as the filter media.

An undergravel filter is an age old, reliable method of filtration. The one drawback is plants. Usually. Most people put a disc under the plant area to stop flow there.

Dilution is the solution for the pollution.

If you plan on using it, be sure to have a minimum of 3" of gravel in order to create good suction. Less gravel = poor suction with under gravel filters. You can always add more oxygenation if you are worried about it.

Personally, I prefer other types of filtration as I believe them to be more effective. With Canisters and HOBs you can manipulate them to create chemical filtration as well, which is an added bonus.

I heard that someplace.
