I set up a tank and am in the beginning stages. Right now, I am wondering which heater would work best in the tank. My house temperature at night gets into the 50s, which is a little low for CRS I think. Was looking at small heaters that would fit in the tank and maintain about 72-74 degrees F. Right now the only one that seems to be able to fit is the Hagen Elite. Any other suggestions would be great! If I can go without one that would be great too, but I am not sure about doing that.
We have a 5 gal betta palace with a 25W Hydor in it that seems to do a good job. We had one of those 10W non-adjustable heaters, but it never could get the tank to a proper temp. You may want to get one of the 25W units, and put a separate temp controller on it for added safety so you don't come home to shrimp soup.
dr fosters lists it as 7". I know in my 5gal with about 2" of substrate, the adjustment knob is just above the waterline and the bottom is just above the sand. Not sure how deep your tank is, but you can always turn them sideways. Hydor also makes an under-gravel heating system in 25W, but it's a bit pricey when you include the heat controller.
all my 25w adjustable heaters fit in a 2.5 gallon just fine. much more reliable as well. the miniature ones have a reputation of overheating or under heating... I frequent a betta forum, and faulty mini heaters has always been an issue for small tanks... so now we recommend the 25w adjustable heaters ... usually hagen elite, hydor theo.
My personal favorite is a no name brand from fleabay for about $6
my hagen elite is about 7in and a bit.. I can measure it in the morning. amazon's measurements is usually for the packaging
It's a bit pricey, but I love my Archaea 25w heater. The heater itself is tiny (maybe 5" max) and has a separate temperature control near the plug. I've recommended this heater several times on the board now, love the thing. Finnex has similar ones that I think come in both a "dial" and digital version.
