Unfortunately its to late for that someone else with a sunsun suggested getting a vale and/or increasing the size of the spraybar and drilling larger holes. apparently there is a flow control on the filter but I cant seem to find it. I don't mind slower filtration since people are reporting something like 125 gpm

A cheap way to restrict the flow is to add adapters and make the water go through a smaller section at some point in the output line. Think of it as the same as traffic might flow. If you have a four lane highway go into a two lane and back to four, traffic slows. Water works much the same. The disadvantage of this way is that it is not easy to adjust and may take some guesswork to get the correct size for the flow you want. But then you can normally return the extra parts you bought to experiment on flow.

I will have to look around for something that will work. I have read and been told drilling the spraybar holes larger will reduce the current which is the issue.

I take the spraybar off and let it flow out with less velocity.

Does anybody else find it ridiculous to try to throttle back a 260gpm filter on A SIX GALLON TANK?

I believe the OP's tank was 6g but mine is a 20 long, its still pretty ridiculous. I wanted the head room for expansion if I decide to go bigger if I do im set on 55g or 75g. Also in the reviews people reported its around 150gph with media

Can't you reduce the flow by lifting up on the black tab that is between the two tubing connections? That's the case with my SunSun.

I thought that was what kept the hoses connected
