Filter - power & arrangement - appropriate?

I'm a newbie to the planted aquarium. Need suggestions on the filter setup. Please see the photo. Using Hopar Canister Filter KF-2218, which has 1200 liters/hour output.

My tank: 36 x 14 x 19 inch (90 x 36 x 50 cm) ~40 gallons

1. Is the output of the filter too much for my 40 gallon tank? Is yes, how can I reduce the outflow as there is no knob provided to control it?

2. As you can see in the photo, intake to the filter (right side) is vertical and the filter output into the tank is horizontal . Is this fine?

looks good to me! I use my spray bars for surface agitation as well as flow

PS have you thought about an all black or blue background?

Thanks msawdey.

What difference would adding a background do? Wall behind the aquarium has a creamy light yellowish color. So I thought that would be enough.

Its because it helps bring out the tank colors better. It can draw the eyes more in then through. Also hides seeing the wires in back

I'm not into the image, but into the hobby...
