I get a ton of stuff on the pre-filter and I'm afraid to deep clean the sponge because a ton of dirt comes flying out. It's almost as if the sponge *wait for it ... *wait for it.... IS IN THE TANK! I'm thinking of removing it but then my Rilli Shrimp will get killed.
I like the idea of having the sponge in the HOB take most of the dirt so I can just squeeze that brown juice out. With the pre-filter it seem as if all the waste just mix with the tank. It's that damn small opening on a 6 gallon, the smallest amount of dirt just brown the water.
I just got an aq 20 and 70 for 30$ off a classified site. They have some old yellow sponges in them which i will just keep. I bought a box of bio rings to add in.. How many rings would you say its safe to steal from my cycled aq 20 to seed the other filters?
Is a few rings in each one enough or do you need more than that?
I run Aquaclear HOB's, I think the horizontal placement of media is by far the best; also they are great for DIY CO2 diffusers. I use the foam pad X2, that's all. When it is time to clean them I use tank water, rinse both thoroughly, and put back in filter.
