White Background

All right, I didn't know where to post this so here goes:

I've been seeing lots of aquariums (mainly nature-styles) that have a white background and white fine sand. The eventual look looks REALLY pleasing to my eyes, and I now wanna make one of these nice backgrounds.

I know lots of guys just have a white wall behind the tank and this gives the nice look, but what to do if you have a stripped goldish wall? I was first thinking of painting/getting a pure-white wallpaper, but how do I create the pleasing shady parts?

Trying to set up a nature tank at the moment, will be busy for a while...

I think most photos you see of a white background is setup just for the photo shoot, where a white panel (posterboard/paper/etc...) is placed behind the tank with a light source shining onto it. This background light give you the gradient white-to-dark look in the background.

If you want a white background on the tank just paint the outside of the tank white.

I have always believed that white backgrounds/substrate, while they look good can really stress the fish. All that reflected light coming from every direction unsettles them. After all if we are after a natural look white is pretty much out, There isnt much in nature that is stark white (or any other single color for that matter.) But hey that is just my .02$

All thought not nesserily white, my fish seem to prefer a soild background color, those with the fake pictures on them seem to confuse my fish. lol. Personally I prefer black or a dark blue. But for pictures the white background with the light makes a really nice gradient effect, plus gets more light into the camera so the aperture opens more and takes better pictures.
