Clear.....

Just some suggestions.....

I keep in touch with jeff howe on the FAMA magazine. He suggests and hopefully i wont misquote but 5-6 times the recirculation of your tank.

So if you have a 20 gallon planted then....20x5 would give you 100 GPH.

I personally am using a Filstar XP3 and love it...very easy to use. Quiet..not silent...it gets 350 GPH. I will put another on the tank in a few weeks. First attempt at planted so I may be speaking out of turn.

On my marine reefs though, the more circulation of tank water through the filter is best.

My 2 cents....

Another quickie here.....

Alot of guys like the ehiem filters...they cost more but are very satisfied with them.

Try searching for your eheim and fluval and check out whats been posted....I did this and ended up with the Filstar....just from advice and what I have read.

BTW...remember in the AQ hobby there are many many opinions....what works for some might not work for others.

I am filtering my 22 Gallon with a whopping Aquaclear mini.. woo hoo

In a heavily planted tank your main concern is going to be water movement, not so much filtration.

Go with what you can afford, and what you can get serviced easily in your area

LOL Marcel!

Just did some research thats all...so far so good. Cannister filters are a pretty hard bunch to mess up...very simple principle...as long as they give good output and are quiet!

Im using a 2224 interlinked into a 2213 on my 75G tank and they works great but what I really dont like abt 2213 is that it get messy when cleaning... and getting it the start... The problem
with it is that a pocket of air is trapped at the top of the cannister,
which (unfortunately) is where the impeller is. If the impeller is spinning
in air, it can't push the air out and the filter won't start.

thats y I look into 204...

filstar is expensive aint they?

I have used Fluval filters for many years and will continue to use them. No matter what is said about them!!!

I have a 40 gal planted and use a 304. I think it is easy to clean and no problems with it since I started it about 1 year ago.

have you guys ever heard the rumors of the factory rating for the filter's flowrate? if they say that this particiular filter has 120gph, it might be a rating of that filter without any media in it... so it will be slower with media...

heard of that?

All the manufactures except Eheim rate the filter pump with no restrictions. That's why they seem to pump so much more water than Eheim.

The Rena XP filters are not that expensive. In fact A Fluval 204 runs about $63.99, a Eheim 2213 runs around $73.99 and a Rena XP-1 runs $69.99. All prices taken from the Pet Solutions Later Summer catalog.

I got one used with a tank I bought, actually there were two, one is black on top the other grey or beige, the black one is in perfect shape, the beige one had the canister broken where the clips attach. I know that to replace the bucket of the cannister is about $26 plus shipping. The prior owner had it closed with C clamps, but I'm not using it.

I have the black top 303 up and running and it is good, very quiet once I get the air out. I don't find the flow to be all that wonderful, and I have added a powerhead to the 29 gallon, but I'll admit that it might be because I just have the inlet turned to shoot along the back of the tank a couple of inches under the surface, a spray bar might behave differently. I have the cannister only about half full, as it was loaded when I got it.
