With Glosso and Hairgrass--combined with a breeding supply of Cherry Shrimp--I'm looking at ways I can clean the EC substrate without losing shrimp in the process. Using a traditional gravel vac has been a little difficult. I like the fact that this thing has internal filters which presumably would catch the shrimp. Of course, one could always add a filter to a standard gravel vac, too.
I have alot of shrimp, a lot of shrimp poo, and hair algae around the substrate as a result (I think).
You'd probably just be better off with something like the fluval edge gravel cleaner. It's cheap and has a low flow rate, so you can suck up all the muck without inhaling a bunch of substrate or critters. I can clean up the messiest parts of my 20L with only about 2-3 gallons of water coming out, which is easily replaced.
