I'm still somewhat new to fish keeping and aquascaping. I had an Azoo Mignon 60 on my five gallon tank and everything seemed good with my plants. I then got a ten gallon tank and put the same filter on that. I have eco complete substrate, use root tabs and liquid fertilizer daily, good lighting and yet all my plants slowly started to die and I couldn't figure out why. Tried to do some research and found out the Mignon 60 was for tanks up to 3.5 gallons or so. So, are my plants dying because of poor filtration?
I have decided that I want to get an Azoo Mignon 360, but cannot find it anywhere. Would a Mignon 150 be sufficient for my ten gallon tank? And what if I didn't have plants in my tank or had artificial plants? What is the downside of having a filter that's made for a 3.5 gallon tank in a ten gallon tank? Again, I'm new to all of this. Any answers will help greatly. Thanks.
Also, flow rate for the 150 says 39 gph. Amazon says the 150 is good for tanks up to 30 gallons, but just wanna make sure this is true.
Part of your problem could be circulation in the tank. The filter turnover rate is mainly for its ability to process fish waste, although it does help circulate nutrients for the plants. If you moved all of your plants over to the 10, they may have experienced shock, some plants are more susceptible than others. You say "good lighting". but that doesn't tell anyone what the lighting IS actually. If you are using stock lights that came with the tank, you are probably lacking for proper lighting. It is easier to light up a 5 vs a 10 with light. More specifics may get you an answer that helps.
Thanks for the reply. I did place my plants from the five gallon to ten gallon tank. Even added new plants as well. Very slowly, everything just started dying.
As far as lightning, I had gotten: Bonlux Screw Socket 120v Meduim Base E26 T10 Tubular LED Light Bulb 10w Daylight 6000k LED Corn Bulb 100w Incandescent Bulbs Equivalent.
It was from a suggestion from another member on this forum that these were good bulbs for my tank and plants.
But aside from the lighting and my dead plants, should I get a filter with a higher flow rate?
i doubt the flow rate or filter size is your immediate issue. What kind of plants do you have? How long is the light on for? What's the current algae situation? and do you have any fish yet?
Unfortunately I don't know the names of most of the plants in my tank as they were given to me by a friend who introduced me to the hobby. I am still a major noob who can only name just a few of the plants. I should also note that my plant growth appears to have just stopped completely. I had some cabombas that grew rapidly before, but stopped and died along with the other fast growing plants. Algae isn't a major problem(although I do have some on the glass) at the moment; I had a bad algae problem in my five gallon though. And yes, I have five glowlight tetras and two endlers livebearers. Do you think it's over stocked? I know there's the inch per gallon rule and I believe I am good on that.
Also, why do you say flow rate and filter size are not an issue? I have a filter that's supposedly meant for a tank size of 3.5 gallons on a ten gallon tank. I'm just curious, what negative impact could this have on my tank or just in general? Thanks again for the responses.
