Emperor filters (or any filter with a bio-wheel) are not the best for planted tanks since the bio-wheel will off gas most of your Co2. My first aquarium was a 55 gallon with an Emperor 400. The plants grew decent but when i switched over to a canister filter the plants really took off! I was only dosing Excel, no Co2 or ferts.

Heh, my fiance thinks I've lost my mind too... Except he couldn't care less if the tanks are there or not. He's classified them into "Stephanie's crazy obsessive hobbies" (along with the vegetable garden) and tries to stay out of it.

I find it funny that he thinks the vegetable garden is a crazy hobby. City Boy just doesn't understand why his Farm Girl doesn't like veggies from the store
