I found a strange looking bug in my aquarium that looks like a brine shrimp but I think it's not. Could someone help me out and tell me what it is? I took it out and put it in a small bowl.
Definitely a scud aka gammarus shrimp. Small fish will eat them. If you have one, odds are you have more of them. They can take over a tank in no time if there are no predators in with them. I have been trying to rid my shrimp tank of them but anything that eats scuds will eat shrimp too. So I have set a trap for them and empty it each day. I return the shrimp to the tank, the scuds go into a different tank and become food. Works pretty good.
scud. you can nuke them with a co2 blast of around 24hrs, with the tank sealed up at the top with saran wrap. they can take over quickly, and often will destroy your moss.
They come in on plants, used substrate, anything really. Unfortunately, if you want them gone, your going to have to take the shrimp out and nuke the tank or do the trap and feed like above.
They are detrivores. They're ugly, but a good thing to have.
