What is the scientific name for a Harlequin lobster?
After lunch, we stopped by the local flagship PetCo to check out their 50% sale. Obviously they were looted off all their GOOD plants, nothing really left, but they had some unidentified shrimps, mid grade cherry shrimps & also had a harlequin lobster in stock.
What do you guys know about this thing? Scientific name if possible?
I can't find any real information on it & only this U-Tube video shows the same species of crustacean I saw today.
I can't say for sure, but I believe it's a procambarus clarkii that has been bred for that color morph. I've seen similar to it on a previous post, but can't remember off the top of my head who had it. From what I remember it's been bred in Asia.
Looking at the pics again, it's probably not a clarkii but probably something along that line.
Other than that YouTube vid, there is no REAL information on the specimen I saw at the store. The 2 most knowledgeable employees both shrugged their shoulders when I asked about it. Neither of them have seen it before. The Harlequin lobster that was in the critter keeper seemed very aggressive as most crays/lobsters are. Not sure if I would want to keep a lobster & have to decorate the tank with just rocks & probably floating plants that they cant reach.
The biggest question I had was what is the predicted size when it's fully grown?
Probably 10 inches or so, there was an LFS here that kept an electric blue crayfish for 6 years just to show people how big they would get before they bought the cute little blue ones. It grew to fill the bottom of a 10 gallon and was ugly as sin.
