you are gonna also make sure there is no copper in your water. If you are going to use ro water, no reason to test. If you are using tap water you will need to find out somehow. I'm guessing there is a test somewhere. maybe just one of those tests home depot does that you send away.
I have the usual ph, amonia, nitrate, and nitrite to test.

This really depends on what kind of shrimp you are trying to keep. If you have Neos, most people don't need to worry about KH and GH that much. These parameters are much more important for Tigers and CRS--softwater shrimp. If you want to keep Tigers and CRS, you should but the API KH/GH test kit and a TDS pen.
The exception to this would be those folks that live in a part of the country with really soft water, such as parts of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the Pacific Northwest. If this is the case, then you will need to think about adding some minerals to your tap water, even for Neos. You'd need a test kit in order to get that right.
