I only have biomedia in it, the intake is connected to a DIY UGF so it doesn't get clogged. I think las time I cleaned was the first time in more than a year.

IMO, not messing with it is the way to go. This is why I also have an hob.

A heavily planted shrimp tank is possible!

i think the brown sludge is diatomes. i get it inside my filter intakes but have never had it get so bad to stop flow but then again most of what i have are hob filters.

Never. Unless it's clogged, which hasn't happened to me yet.

Every 6 months i give the filter a DEEP cleaning. Full rinse in tap water, take out impeller and clean every nook and cranny then poke a wet paper towel plug through the hose. Takes a couple of hours to get all the gunk out.

Depends on the tank. Some can get away with very little filter cleaning and some may need to do it more often. I used to do it about every two months. I now use a sump and clean the pre filter weekly and then vacuum the sump about once a month. Super easy to clean a sump versus a canister.

I clean mines every two weeks. I used to do it every week, but that was when I had some messy fish in my tank. I take out my sponges and rinse and squeeze them in old tank water. I give my sechem matrix a slight rinse as well

Eheim + jagno prefilter. Cleaning prefilter every 2 months not because they are too dirty but because I have to replace purigen. Cleaning Eheim every 8-10 months because there is gunk over the impeler.
Green gunk inside the hoses is because of the high light been in use.
I have hoses which hasn’t been cleaned for more than 3 years ant they are in good shape.

every 3-6 months. I do clean the prefilter every time it looks dirty since it is a transparent canister usually around 2 months time?
