Using Morton white crystal water softener?

An uncle of mines uses Morton white crystal water softener, and he told me to use it if I get algae. Does it work? He puts some in his koi pond every month, to prevent algae. Is it harmful to shrimp?

Some water softeners use solar salt. Very bad, especially if it contains the chemicals that remove corrosion and build-up from household plumbing. That is why most of them say "99.5% all natural," because the other .5% is these chemicals.

I have a ton of hair algae, it's not even funny... it's covering 50% of my 29G tank. If I pull it out, it would probably pull up all the gravel and probably kill shrimp. How do I even remove it?

Solar salt is made from evaporating sea water, that .5% that is not NaCl are natural insolubles not some evil additives. You can use this in an aquarium but unless you are using as a medication not sure why you would. Don't use water softener salt with sodium hexametaphosphate or "softener care", obviously this will be clearly marked on the bag.
