Choosing substrate

I am setting up a 10 gallon shrimp tank, it is also going to have some small Rasboras fishes.

For substrate i have been thinking of using soil with sand cap, or my second alternative is using a fine grade sand to make a DSB like this:

Any suggestions?

In my personal, I will use fluval shrimp stratum. It keeps PH around 6.4-6.8.

What shrimp are you planning to keep? I wouldn't use Fluval Shrimp stratum, batches are inconsistent in pH buffering. If your keeping neos, I would use Fluval Plant, but shrimp stratum is fine, just buffers to the pH a little low for neos, but then again, that's only for awhile. If your keeping CRS, I would go for UP Shrimp sand (a little expensive) , or Aquasoil.
