KH Low Problem

Hello,

I have a low KH problem in my 18g and 7.5g tanks. I been doing large water changes to bring down the high nitrates from cycling and thought maybe that would help with the KH as well. KH would match tap water for a day and it starts dropping.

Today's test:

Tap GH 7 KH 5
18g GH 7 KH 4
7.5g GH 7 KH 4

I know tomorrow the KH will be 3. I believe it's the tannins from the driftwood. PH / KH drops fast in the 7.5g tank.

Should I use crushed coral to correct this problem? If so, how much? Tanks are for Neos/Malawas

18g (Red Cherry Neo Shrimp | Malawa Shrimp)
7.5g (Yellow Neo Shrimp)
3.2g (Pumpkin Neo Shrimp)
2g (Snails)
11.4g (new home soon for the Pumpkin Neos)

KH Low Problem

And have a KH of 0. Doesn't matter depending on what you keep.

KH can be higher in cherries than 0, but yeah...if you can get as close to 0 as possible that's a plus.

Okay. I thought my Tap KH was in good range for Neos? I want to use my tap water so how do I lower the KH for water changes to match the tanks? The low KH is throwing off the PH.

Guess I need to do more reading on this.

I raised my kh from 2-3 to 4-5 by adding 2 teaspoons of aragonite and mixing it on top of the sand I have. I can see it start to dissolve in a couple weeks and I replenish it every month or so. It's really improved my ph stability and now I can keep snails.

Hardware: 50 Gallon SeaClear, Eheim 2213 canister, 5lb auto CO2, Seachem Flourite, Eco Complete, 100 watts of T5HO.
Software: Fish, plants, research.

Oh god . I had such a long day and I just realized as I was looking at my tank journal notebook that I'm wrong about the KH 5. KH 5 is actually 5 drops with Nutrafin GH/KH test.

Real Tap GH 7 KH 2.8, 5 drops
Real 18g GH 7 KH 2.2, 4 drops
Real 7.5g GH 7 KH 2.2, 4 drops

Since it comes out of Tap KH 2.8, would it be okay to use crushed coral to keep it there in the tanks or should I really get my KH to 0?

7.5g (Yellow Neo Shrimp)

Would baking soda be a better option at raising the KH instead of crushed coral? Or something else besides those too? I was planning on going to pet store today to see what they have.

Thanks for the help.

Why would you need to raise the KH though? It's really not a problem.

Both tanks PH is not stable. The PH/KH doesn't match aged tap water for water changes. I want both to be the same. I thought raising the KH in tanks to match aged tap water would be stable and also make the tanks PH stable.

KH still dropping in tanks and so is the PH.

Tap PH GH/KH - 7.4 GH 7 KH 5
18g PH GH/KH - 7.0 GH 7 KH 3
7.5g PH GH/KH - 7.0 GH 7 KH 3

What do I need to do to fix this problem?

7.5g (Yellow Neo Shrimp)
3.2g (Pumpkin Neo Shrimp)
2g (Snails)
11.4g (new home soon for the Pumpkin Neos)

I don't see a problem with the tank. I see a problem with the numbers. There are quite a lot of people that already told you there's no problem having a low kH. What is your reasoning to increase kH?

To raise it you can use lime, cuttle bone, crushed coral, baking soda. I have a tank with Neos (RCS, Rili) and Amanos and use only RO water. I don't dose anything to raise kH and have no problems. Currently 6 Rili, two RCS and one Amano berried.

Sorry for asking this question(it relates to GH.KH). But which test kit would you guys recommend that every shrimp hobbyist should get?
