Feeding RCS

Hello I was wondering what was the correct way of feeding red cherry shrimp and how often I am supposed to feed them since I received a package pf hikari shrimp cuisine yesterday and sometimes the fish eat the shrimp food while the shrimps are just sitting there doing nothing.

Unfortunately, I don't think Hikari Shrimp Cuisine isn't something you should feed day after day. It's way too high in protein.

It's best to alternate foods. Fortunately, feeding Cherries is cheap and easy.

You should feed only what they can eat in a couple hours - just takes some trial and error. And then you should only feed every other day or so.

Some great things to feed (I don't feed the same thing twice in a row):
  • Hikari
  • Algae wafers
  • Blanched spinach
  • Blanched zucchini & squash
  • Nettles

Any other speciality shrimp food you like (totally not necessary, though).

Many shrimpers also keep an Indian Almond Leaf in the tank for shrimp to graze on as it decays and for biofilm to grow.

I think it is easiest to put some type of weighted container (like a small pyrex dish or plastic dish with a bit of gravel) in the tank then use a tube or some tweezers to put the food in the container. That way you can remove the food easily and know exactly how much of it they are eating.

I've been feeding my shrimp every couple days and I've been trying out different foods. So far I've tried Hikari Shrimp Cuisine, Crab Cuisine (they really like this), and Sinking Wafers, API Algae Wafers, Marine Select Green Marine Algae with Garlic Extract, as well as blanched spinach and zucchini (they didn't get much of the zucchini because the snails I didn't know I had all came out of hiding as soon as I put it in and ate it). Their favorite is the crab food. They honestly didn't seem to care for the shrimp food lol. Only one of them ate it! But they may have just had low appetites since they are still getting used to their new environment.

I don't really feed my RCS, they mostly eat biofilm. I feed them like once per two weeks or once a month.
