I have been thinking about once I get my 55 gallon established, getting two filter feeders. I have higher flow in my tank since I have a Fluval Fx5 with that setup. I think two filter feeders would find the high flow much to their liking. I have only seen two bamboo shrimp at the LFS, but never talked to anyone who has had them. I know there are other species rather than the bamboo, I just don't know what they are. I always love hearing both the positive and negative with anything I've never kept before. Thanks for the help everyone!
As long as your tank has a spot where the shrimp can sit and filter the water flowing by, it will be happy. If there is not enough gunk floating about on its own, you can feed them by pulverizing flake food/pellet food or feeding pretty much anything shrimp appropriate that comes in tiny pieces. Just mix it up with some water and squirt it in front of them with a syringe. They go nuts cleaning their claws off for a while and get a good meal out of it.
I only have experience with the bamboo shrimp. I actually got it as a hitch hiker with some plants from one of my LFS. They are fun to watch with their little fans flapping in the water
I've had bamboo shrimp before and they were great. They were my first shrimp and the used to sit in front of the water flow and feed. They'd move along with the water flow the water was coming from so they'd move as I moved my filter outlet. Pretty cool.
Also the stripe down their back lightens as they grow comfortable in their aquarium.
Anyone have a good idea where to find Bamboo shrimp?? My LFS got two in once by accident. Is there anyone on here that regularly has them? They seem to be difficult to find.
I know this is OT, but I wouldnt say that Athens is a very small city.
We have ; 2x WalMart, Kmart, Target, Jos A Bank, Longhorns, Outback, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, 2x Lowes, Home Depot, Macys, Belk, JC Penney, TJ Maxx, Steinmart, multiple McDs-BK-Zaxbys etc, 4 cinemas, not to mention all of the stuff downtown like the Classic Center, Ga Theater, UGA etc. --heck, I think any town that has a "bypass" is a decent sized town.
They really are cool. I recommend them for anyone who has decent flow in their tank. They hold out these feather looking baseball mitts and catch microscopic tidbits as they fly by. They have four of these appendages which is four times the fun.
Thats the idea :icon_smil....anyone on helping me acquire some??
