Go to the woods, find maple trees or oak trees and pick up leaves, bring them home, wash them off with water really well, pat them dry, and then set them out to fully dry.

What do you do with the leaves? Can you use hardwood leaves from trees in your yard or is there danger of pesticides etc.

You put the leaves in the tank and it grows beneficial organisms that the shrimps, especially babies, love to snack on.

Generally trees in developed areas will have pesticides on them. You should call your development and see if they do use it. But to absolutely safe go to a forest.

I go to a state park and a couple of large nature trails to get my oak leaves. That CAN get me garbage bags full of leaves, but I only take what I need. Also, inspect any leaf you collect. Last time I went collecting oak leaves, I accidentally picked up a couple spiders! Harmful too. I caught one black widow and two brown recluses! The widopw could have easily ruined my day. Also make sure they don't have any kind of fungus or other insects.
