java fern rhizome black and hard

java fern came with sponge and metal weight around it.
i kept it in that way for a month cuz i didnt have space to plant them yet.
i took it off yesterday and found that the rhizome area is black and connected and hard like a rock.
but leaves look healthy. is it normal?
can i still use it?

Re: java fern rhizome black and hard

It's normal, all of mine are like that too. As long as it doesn't get mushy and black you are good!

Healthy Java Fern rhizome is green & flexible. Your description doesn't sound so good. The positive thing is Java Fern is one tough plant. I'd tell you to give it chance if you don't see new growth in a month then toss it and start over.

Seems like just yesterday I told you to take those weights off.
