This with no surface agitation/oxygen could do this overnight.

I have been wanting to do a rescape, just might have the chance now.

Lesson learned.
i have a super high light co2 injected tank, so water change day for me is a big deal

i have a huge trashcan that ages my water overnight with a powerhead and chlorine remover. this allows any excess chlorine to gas off, oxygen levels to even out, and water temp to be matched. i change 80% weekly. so it'd be a bad day if there was low oxygen right when i turned my co2 wide open

The way all the shrimp, fish and snails were clinging to the top of the tank, I don't think it had anything to do with the towel. I'm thinking more lack of oxygen. The towel only gets used when wiping down the glass or to clean up water spilled on the floor.

Detergent in the towel still could have negatively affected livestock.

But yea sounds more like an oxygen issue to me.

Looks like I will be investing in something like this but on a smaller scale. I only have 3 tanks, a 12g, 3g and the 24.

but a 32 gallon rubbermaid at my local walmart is 11 bux.
that should be enough to handle all 3 tanks

3 gets about 50% 2 times a week (still cycling)

I guess the only good thing that comes out of this is that now you have an excuse to go fish shopping.

I'll probably start to replace my Malawa and Amano shrimp before fish.

My guess is due to the lack of o2 since u topped off the tank covering the spraybar no surface agitatition and covering the tank is what did it
