DIY filter cartridges

I have an Aqueon HOB filter that used cartridges with carbon. I've been reading that carbon isn't really what you want in your filter, so I cut open the cartridge, dumped all the carbon out and replaced the empty poly-wool stuff back in the tank. What should I put in the filter instead of the cartridge? Has anyone tried plastic pot scrubbers?

I haven't ever used a scrubber but I know people do use them. Just be absolutely sure that it's free of chemicals, soaps, etc., as some of them are sold with that stuff already on/in them.

You could replace the carbon with purigen and see the floss back up. The purigen would need regenerating after a while so it would be handy if you had some spare purigen whilst cleaning the original.
