Does Purigen help with green water issues?

When breeding my Bolivian ram cichlids dug up a shallow API root tab wen they decided to make a nest at the base of my amazon sword using the root system to hide the wigglers. The excess nutrients seems to have caused a green water algae bloom. Ive done water changes and a 3 day black out (except when feeding) and still no major difference. I just bought some purigen and was curious if adding this to my filter will help take some of this algae out of the water... If not what are some other methods that wouldn't result in me having to spend an arm and a leg on UV sterilizers or powerheads with micron filters?

Thanks in advance!

Purigen will clear the green water up in a few hours. Stuff is amazing.

I think a combination of changing my lights (raising them and cutting back on the time they were on) and purigen helped to clear up my green water. It took about 3 days for my water to clear up.

It might help indirectly in that it will remove dissolved organics that might be contributing to the bloom.

^^^ This

It might or might not work depending on what's fueling the GW. Purigen only removes wastes that will eventually breakdown into NH3.

I should mention that I did the light change and loads of water changes for a while before trying the purigen and while it did help some, it didn't fully clear up until I put the purigen in my filter.

Alright, thanks for all your help everyone! I will try to do more water changes and watch the light... I cant really be sure what is fueling the green water tho... it happened when my rams bred as mentioned in the original post, so I associated it with the root tabs getting kicked up in nest building but there were also a few days during this time that I accidentally left my lights on for about 12 or 14 hours instead of the usual 8... So could be both.. I thought that the 3 day black out I did would have helped if it were a lighting issue though... I seemed to have no effect.
