what to do... tank upgrade/downgrade

So I'm kinda lost as to what to do... I have currently have a 56 gallon column tank. Even though I really love it, I feel like it kinda limits my stocking options being as it's only 30 inches long. I was considering kinda down/upgrading to a 38 gallon. Which is 36 x 12 x 20. I like the dimensions. I get the feeling it'd be a lot better for schooling fish, since they like to swim from side to side more, even if it's only 38 gallons compared to 56. And aquascaping-wise (is that even a word?) would be pretty cool since it's so long.

What should I do? would it be worth it?

While a 38g is longer, its not very deep. I would go with a 40b as they are longer AND have the depth.

I don't like the back to front of the 40b. I really like the dimensions of the 38 gallon.
