Changing to a new filter

So, I upgraded my tank from a 36gal to a 55 I got for free from a family member. Anyway, I got a new canister filter and have it hooked up and put my HOB filter on the tank as well from the 36gal. My question is how long do I need the HOB filter hooked on the tank to wait for the new canister filter to get the bacteria needed on my media.

I'd run it for about a month to get it seeded or if you want less equipment in your aquarium. Remove the media from the HOB and stuff it inside the canister along with the new media from the canister.

You could always use both. Better to over flter than under filter. Which canister did you get?

I am looking into your future, wait I am getting a reading...

You are gonna set up another tank! Your gonna need a mature filter in a hurry because you need to put fish in it right away.... You are so glad you left this filter running on the 55. You a happy indeed.

Have an open mind, but not so open that your brains fall out.

Think outside the glass box.

Thanks.. I was thinking around a month to 6 weeks would do the trick so I'm glad I was on the right page. I got the API Nexx filter.. I read mixed reviews and I thought I would give it a try. I wanted something simple since this is my first canister and I really liked the function of upgrading the filtration by just getting an extender for it. So far I really like it a lot. I'll do a review for it once two months are over and I have to do my first media change.

Rich.. you are 100% correct, lol. Once this canister is set I'll be setting up a planted guppy tank. It's going to be a 20 gal long and since the hob was for my 36 gal I'll have extra filtration. I'm sure I'll be having to plenty of fry in there and no coubt I'll be over run with guppy from time to time.

Thanks for the help!
