Otto's an driftwood

For 1 month I've been soaking my driftwood in a 50 gallon barrel covered. I was changing the water every week with a big bottle of H2O2 added every change.
When I finally added it to my tank I was surprised at how all the fish were attacking it. I don't even think the ottos and Panda garras leave it. My Badis are matting again, they also are picking on the driftwood.
I was under the assumption that driftwood would be more for visual than for the types of fish I have.
Do you think the sudden activity is because of something new to the environment, or does the driftwood release something into the water?
I did leech visually anyway the tannis and I don't see algea mold ,or fungus on the driftwood.

That fungus stuff may still be forming on the wood but the fish are eating it before you see any. I normally add new wood to occupied tanks and don't see the stuff. The times I put new wood in before fish went in I did see it. It only takes a day to appear so I suspect fish find some growing on the wood within a couple hours.

Fish will eat that stuff like candy. It forms because of the organic matter in the wood.
