I'm saying this because he is probably adding root tabs way too much.

In addition to using gel capsules you can make your own osmocote ice cubes too.

Do either the clay or Osmocote tabs harm fish if they get swallowed?

My plants seem healthy simply by dosing micro and macros nutrients in the water...however, I would like to know that i am in no way hindering their growth by limiting nutrients.

Once the capsules have been made is there a specific schedule to follow?

Do we add capsules every month? 2 months? 3 months?

And one capsule should cover what area in the substrate.

Thanks

You can save a lot!!! I am too starting to researching in making my own root tabs. I have tried API and those from aquariumplants.com They are either too pricy (the API one) or too small of portion. For me to completely fill up my substrate with root tabs, I would need something like 15 to 20 api tablets.

You can get 3lb of Osmocote from Lowes for $12. $5 for 500 gel caps. This should last you for 2 years at least.....

If you're using root tabs, you're pressing them all the way to the bottom glass beneath your substrate, so they will ideally never surface in your aquarium.

What size capsules do you all recommend for the Osmocote?

Again, since I make my own root tabs it makes things a lot easier to manage, and saves me a lot of money by making my own. I use size -00- capsules, and fill them with Osmocote Plus, currently I have around 25 pre-made root tabs sitting in my stand. I add new tabs to my 55 gallon tank every 4 months like clock work, and because I got the 4.5lb Osmocote Plus 9 month ago, I still have pretty much a full 4.5lbs left.

You figure the 4.5lb Osmocote Plus cost around $20 + $9 for the 1,000 size -00- capsules = $29; Leaves me with a major supply for over years to come. Which saves me a lot of money in the long run, compared to using say API or Flourish root tabs which won't last as long as the Osmocote Plus does because of the time release formula that Osmo. + contains.

But that's just what's in the substrate, but I also dose the water column using a dry fert mix with water.

Thanks. I'm already doing dry ferts in my tank - micro and macro. I'm looking for a more economical root tab so I think this is the answer.

To me it was the answer, I don't want to say yes/no for you..... It's your discretion to (use/not use) this style of root tabs in your tank.

Again I've had great success with this style of root tabs + macro/micro dry ferts + and 1/4 teaspoon of Azomite (azomite is only used once per month), in my 55 gallon tank and my plants look great with constant new growth.

So, then, how many capsules do I use? I'm assuming one per plant or 2 for my large swords and val.

I put 12 grains of Osmocote Plus into each individual capsule, then I add in a bit of plantex csm+b to fill the capsule. Then I just stuff each capsule into the substrate near the plant roots, remember to only put 1 capsule per square foot of tank space otherwise it could have negative results on your tank.

So, for a 48 by 12 inch footprint, I would use 4 of these capsules. Correct?
