Someone has suggested that I add some aquarium salt to my 55 gallon community tank (to help with a minor fish ailment). It has swords, java fern & moss, dwarf sag, various crypts, banana plants, hornwort, spiral val. & Bacopa. Will the salt affect the plants at the recommended concentration of approx. 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons?

You may notice some leaf dieback but they will return in the next round. I do not think echinodorus sp. will mind and val neither, but its hard to say.

Every time I have added Salt to my tanks that contain Java Fern I experience some pretty substancial leaf death. I get brown spots that develeop, that eventually just turn into holes. Dwarf Sag also suffers a bit but recovers quickly (2 weeks or so). You "might" lose some leaves on the bacopa, but nothing too bad.

So salt may or may not impact your plants, it really depends on how healthy they are before you start treatment. Now, if you are only treating for a week or so it shouldnt be too bad, just make sure you disolve the salt in some tank water before you add to the tank.

brown holes just appeared in old val leaves. new val shoots are yellowish. Some have greened up and others haven't. i add hagen fertilizer every other day. 1 cc per 10 gal. I also have a banaba plant in there as well as some wisteria and hornwort. hornwort is taking over. vals did fine for the last month. Do not have any water parameters to tell you, unfortunately. have 20 watts of light. and some sunlight.
