My gourami has been acting strange lately, PH is as should be, no nipping or biting, he just lays there all day! I've been having to hand feed him since he wont eat on his own, I've had him for about 4-5 years so idk if he is just getting up in age or what. the only physical deformity I can see Is the blue lines on him which on my other gourami are very light, are very dark, almost like showing ribs!
Please help if you can, he is currently laying sideways on the waters surface (laying on a plant that breaches).
Here's some pictures, idk if they will help...
thank you so much Trnt for the response! a shot in the dark is better than nothing right now, I did turn the light off and I have fed him for tonight (by hand of course). I don't think he has a parasite fortunately, but I did look up their age and I guess if they do live for around 4 years he's getting up there... im going to presume he's just aging, like I said this behavior didn't JUST happen all the sudden its been slowly leading up to it. He still has some of that old guy energy im him though, but still he just stays in one area every 10 minutes or so going up for air then going back to his spot in the heavily planted area...
Would you happen to have an airstone/pump to help oxygenate the water?
Do you inject CO2 in your tank? If so, do you have a drop checker and is it showing that your CO2 levels are normal? If you don't have a drop checker it may be worth disconnecting your CO2 for a day to see if there is any improvement.
nope I don't have any injected CO2, just fertilizers. Also I don't use airstones as they cause acidic water (sometimes), my plants pearl when its light time (so I call it) so my fish do fine in the need for oxygen
It's pretty usual for fish to start resting a lot as they get old, my bettas always did. If he dies, at least you know you ensured he had a good long lifespan.
i had a betta who passed from old age recently who acted much the same. I tried everything, same as you (almond leaves, hand feeding, water changes) and over the course of a week he slowly passed. =( if your other fish/water parameters are fine I would suspect age to be the culprit.
