We had a second power outage sometime in the last hour and a half.. I just checked my JEBO canister filter and it is NOT running. The air stone is.. We had one for about 45 seconds, about 4 hours ago and the pump came back on right away.. I tried unplugging it and plugging it back in and nothing. Even tried a different outlet. The input and output lines still show water in them, so its still pressured.. When I unplug for tank maintenance, and plug back in when done, it will make noise until I prime it.. Usually a couple of pumps and its good to go.. Now, absolutely nothing. The heater should be too.. Tank temp is currently 83, which is what the tank normally is.. It's 0135 and what do I do? I can't open the filter at the moment and take anything out of it to use in a HOF filter... What are my options until morning?
Where in NorCal? I was born and raised in SF.... The air stone is running... so is the heater.... I can get a new canister in the AM.. Can I use the media in the one that isn't running to help start up the new one? I will also add some SafeStart and can test the tank for the next few days... I might also do a 30% water change in the morning... Thanks for helping.. Never experienced this before.. Lori
thank you for your help.. at this moment, the filter has been shut down for about 3 hours with no water circulation thru it. Is the bio medial toast at this point?
I'm not telling what to do, but I'd salvage what I could. If you're in CA, it's really early there so it is going to be awhile before you can get to the store,
You're going to have cycle issues whether you salvage what is alive or start over though.
Something to know @Tribabe2009 is even if some of the bacteria die off due to the 3 hours without circulation, there will still be a very large colony of bacteria present on the bio media. This is important in that it will grow back very quickly once you get the filter setup again. My tests on another thread indicated the ammonia bacteria could double in size in less than 24 hours. The nitrite bacteria does not grow back as fast, but from what I have read it can double in size under ideal conditions in less than 36 hours.
With all that said, pulling the bio media out, putting it in some type of media bag and placing it near the air stone is a great idea.
Once you get your new filter setup, adding the recommended dosage of Prime to your tank will help keep the ammonia in check for around 48 hours. This should be enough time for your new filter to get up and running with minimal issues.
Thank you all for your advice and support.. After all was said and done, the impeller was "stuck".. Added a Whisper 4 HOB filter to the tank, while I took the JEBO 839 canister apart... The filter inside looked pretty good but flushed it while doing a 35% water change.. It's been several days now and still have the Whisper 4 running with just a pad in it.. It really helped to catch any loose stuff that was pumped back into the tank.. The initial tank test readings were fine and will test again today.. The canister is running fine right now but the idea of getting a self-priming one is still in my plans.. Just can't afford one right now.. Everyone in the tank is doing fine, so I guess my "motherly" panic was all for naught!..
Thanks again everyone...
