Pet Land in Tyler - What happaned?

So I went home to Tyler this weekend to visit my parents. I stopped by Pet Land to check out their plant selection because it is usually pretty good. Does anybody know what has happened to that store? They removed an entire isle of tanks, the isle that had the cichlids on one side and goldfish on the other, they also have only 2 pieces of wood instead of of the usual dozen or two. It has only been maybe 2-3 months since I have last been in there and they had 100% new staff. I asked one what has happened everything was rearranged and missing. She said she did not know she has only been there 2-3 weeks but they no longer sell dogs even, but maybe the owners are getting tired of some of the things. It was just really strange and did not feel like the Pet Land that I have been going to for years.

VERY glad they stopped selling dogs, Petland is discusting, and one of the largest stores that supports puppy mills, course, 99% of pet stores who sell pups are from puppymills...

Honesty sounds like a good change.

Yes I agree with the not selling dogs but I don't have dogs only fish and plants so that's all that matters to me in terms of why they decreased there number of tanks by 1/3rd.

The pet land where i live moved uptown, marginalized their aquatics and upped their dog stocking to keep up with the demand of all the young hip couples.
I suppose puppies keep the doors open not clumps of DHG..

I don't know. I want a dog, but I'm going to a rescue or a breeder - not a pet store. I'm just currently evaluating my life style and living situation first.

Also, how are your shrimples doing?

Sorry, I can't really offer an answer, but I did notice the same thing. I have been away from the aquarium hobby for several years. I am just now getting back in, and was rather shocked when I walked into Pet Land, and found the aquatic department so small. Also, I did hear the same thing from one of the employees when I was in there, that she was brand new. They have been running adds in the paper looking to hire more people. Maybe they had some kind of management turnover.

I was never a huge fan of Pet Land. It seems they really varied in quality from store to store. However, it was a lot better resource then what we have now in Tyler, which is nothing. There is a new aquarium store off of 110 almost to Whitehouse, but it has a saltwater focus. I guess Dallas is really the closest place to Tyler to find anything decent. Maybe Shreveport has something. I will have to check into that.

Side note I was kind of surprised that PetCo has increased its offering of planted tank supplies when I checked them out recently. They had a few cheap CO2 system knock offs similar to the Fluval 88. I think the brand name was Ista. They also had some Eco Complete, and Flourite. Along with some other supply type items. I'm no fan of the big retailers, but it was a lot more then they used to carry, which was nothing. Of course its been 6-7 years since I had a planted tank.

Texas petland stores are all on the verge of shutting down. Theyre downsizing what they dont shut down. Regardless, thier aquatics selection was always "standard" at best.
What in particular are you looking for?

The Petco's and Petsmart's near me have really been upping their game in the fish section.
Alot healthier and cleaner. Separate quarantine tanks on separate filter systems systems for new arrivals.
A big 55 gallon planted display.
Lots of much nicer tanks and stands. And huge in rush of plantedtank related equipment. Nothing spectacular but nice to see all the same.
Maybe you can look forward to it where you live?
Not sure how widespread this thing is lol. They vary so much from region to region.

Down here there arent alot of puppy mill dogs anymore. There are some.
They have all this paperwork and tons of sign proclaiming so. Even if that is the case I suspect most of the dogs are from backyard breeders. Not a single dog would fit nicely into breed standards.
Which in my opinion isnt much better.

Petland restocked their plants a few weeks ago here in Tyler. Most of the plants in my tank came from petland. Petsmart is upping theie plant and fish game though and it giving them some strong competition. They changed the layout of the tanks a bit but they are getting it all back stocked and such.
