hey guys, a friend of mine has a problem and i am racking my brains out over it. 40ppm nitrate but 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite. water changes aren't helping. it is a fully mature tank, but we can't seem to get the nitrates down. any ideas?
Filter media that hasn't been cared for can be a nitrate factory. Cleaning up the bottom of a sump or squeezing out a sponge filter usually helps as would using a Python on the substrate. Water changes, obviously help, but it takes a LOT more than you think to get to drop. Remember all WC do is dilute and if the source water has even low nitrate levels, it just makes it a tougher trek downhill. As suggested, try a different test kit or at least check for an expiration date.
Anyone around the university city area? Looking for a adult male cherry shrimp. Think it might be my problem since the last couple females dropped their eggs/ maybe none of the other males are old enough.
