Brooklyn Aquarium Society?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this board, but not so new to planted tanks -- I used to have a few planted tanks (complete with apistos, rams, and lots of tetras), but got out of the hobby after I moved to New York. Now I'm getting ready to set up my first tank in seven years. (So excited!) It's going to be rather modest -- a low-tech 20 gallon long, with apistos if I can find any -- and I need stuff. Driftwood, rocks, and plants for now, and eventually fish, too.

That said, would anyone recommend attending Brooklyn Aquarium Society meetings? I've checked out all the LFS's in NYC (Win and Pacific are the best, no?), but I'd rather buy stuff through club members, if possible. Any other clubs I should know about?

That's all for now. Thanks in advance!

I haven't heard many good things about the BAS. It's often somewhere along the lines of "old people's club", "90% of auction items were Mollies" and "I can't believe some bidder actually paid $10 for an Amazon sword". To be fair, I have not attended any of their meetings myself, so I don't know how true those statements are.

The only other club that I know of is Greater City, which is based in Queens.

Welcome to TPT!

Here is a thread that might help you to look for stuff. Also I recommend to look the S&S shop from this forum.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I'm in north Brooklyn, no car. Coney Island is a bit of a trek for me but I'm game for checking out the BAS at least once. I'll report back...

And thanks for that LFS link, Lopez. Been lurking that discussion a while...

So much misconception about a club from members who have never visited their meetings. The Brooklyn Aquarium Society is the best club around and a lot has changed since years ago, lots of new members and younger crowd. There is something for everyone, every auction now includes both saltwater and freshwater items. There is no such thing as 90% of items are mollies (in fact I don't remember last time there were mollies) and the prices are great. Yes I've seen beautifull plants go for decent amount of money but monstly I've seen stuff go for dirt cheap; it all depends how many bags of the same stuff are up for auction and how many people are willing to pay for a particular bag. Selection is completely different from month to month and there could be lots of corals one month and no corals but lots of plants the following. I've seen the rarest stuff in those bags that I've never seen at stores.

Needless to say this Friday (May 8, 2009) is the giant auction so why don't you guys show up and see for yourself, you've got nothing to loose and a whole lot to gain.

From the website, it sounds like you have to be a member to attend an auction.

technically yes, you can get in for $5.00 and at the end of the event if you like it apply that towards your membership.
