4 and a half hour auction? Geez..

You worried about safety, eva? The aquarium's pretty much connected to the subway via that bridge.

It was pretty nice, there was alot of plants, very good deals on fish, some saltwater stuff too. It was nice to meet some aquarium people from NYC for a change, the atmosphere was very friendly. I hope more people from the forums start coming.

By the way the area is very safe, its one block away from the 60th precinct. They are having another auction next month I think.

I think this is the first time I've heard relatively positive comments on the BAS. I don't think too many forum members will start joining though, if they had to pay $20 to join a club, they'd probably prefer something more niche.

I believe auctions are a part of their monthly meetings as well, but this month, it was just a big one.

Is Coney Island generally considered unsafe? I've always thought it was too barren to be considered unsafe.

Yes, plants were only a minority in the auction but it was still fun to see where prices went. Lots of fish and reef stuff. What was really funny was how some common stock went for a lot of money while some rarer specimens were cheap. I can post some of the prices later.

If we get more plant people there, we could entice planted tank interest. The BAS forum is open to everyone so we could use that to start.

(Should mention that I've never been to this type of auction before.)

i went! the meeting was a new experience for me, having never been to an aquarium society before. there were a lot of dry goods & books for sale, and of course the auction -- saltwater and freshwater fish and inverts, plus a few plants. big crowd.

i stocked up on dry goods, as i'm still just setting up my tank -- still waiting for the lights to arrive from pets-warehouse.com, and the driftwood to arrive from badcopnofishtank. (i'll post pictures soon). for now, here are some snapshots of the event:

Hmm... I remember seeing one lady there with a camera, I wonder if that was you :P

I jotted down some of the prices:
  • Discus went for $20-58, most were in the low 30's
  • Black Ghost Knife - $20
  • Lot of over a dozen pink glo danios - $5
  • Blue acara - $8
  • GBR (juvenile trio) - $15
  • Bristlenose pleco - $20
  • Bamboo shrimp - $7
  • Ghost Shrimp (6-8, all berried) - $8
  • Tomato clownfish - $16
  • Snowflake Eel - $5 (A similar sized one was $30 at a LFS)
  • Java Moss - $8
  • Amazon sword - $8
  • Marsilea - $10
  • Some giant kind of Chain Sword (?) - $13
  • Small Duckweed - $5
  • P. gayii - $8
  • Jungle Val - $4

There was a whole bunch of other reef stuff (polyps, corals, snails, cleaner shrimp) and freshwater fish (cories, goldfish, tetras, bettas, catfish, stuff I didn't recognize at all) I didn't write in.

For what it's worth, the latest issue of The Aquatica has been posted online. Some articles on freshwater shrimp and plants, I am sure you'll enjoy the read.

Head on over to

and download either a color or B&W copy....for free. it's posted on the main page.

Went to the metting for the first time with a friend and we were pleased. Picked up a few books and dry good. They had a few endlers, apisto, acaras, cherry shrimp, ect. They also had a few saltwater inverts and some plants. Met a few people and enjoyed myself.
