My Emersed setup!

Check it out >>>
Set up a 20L for emmersed growth! Most of the plants came out of 2 or three emmersed bowls I had setup under a 13w CFL. I bought a T5NO 30" fixture(2x18w bulbs)and some Organic Choice Potting Mix with with some Miracle-Gro peat moss and Osmocote mixed in. I used egg crate and window screen to create a layer under the dirt so the moisture has somewhere to collect. I found that having the dirt too wet made algae and fungus. got one of those versa tops from petco and Voula!

Plant list include so far:
Staurogyne repens
Ludwigia 'red'
Hemianthus callitrichoides
Rotala rotundifolia
Eleocharis parvula
Java Moss/mixed moss

Also, I at the last meet, I got some mixed moss from sonicpath, turns out there was some Riccia mixed in. Its now growing out of the moss. hope to have tons of it soon.

All of this is for a future project, I am hoping to grow out most of my plants emmersed to save some money and not buy as many plants when I'm ready. and for trades with my fellow NY hobbyists.

Well I don't think I would put rock or driftwood into an emmersed tank since that would take up too much space. The whole point of this is to grow plants not really aquascape. There is no water.
I have plenty of moss so I'm not interested. Thanks. If your trying to sell plants then you should post in the sellers forum.

Haha. It's got a glass cover. One of those versa tops from aqueon I think. Don't want to run co2 on it right now. Don't have the $$ to buy another co2 tank. Ill just use the free stuff from the air.

please excuse the dumb question but I'm new to planted tanks and I'm gonna ask. I see your tank has no water in it,just the condensation on the glass, you said emersed, does that mean you will eventually put them in water? I didn't know these plants can be grown without being in water. Years ago I planted in glass jars and vases but they were regular house plants.

It's not dumb at all. This tank is strictly to grow out plants. The aquatic plants in this set up can be grown "emersed" meaning out of the water. In their natural habitat they've evolved to grow submersed because there is mostly likely a wet season where at certain times of the year their habitat is flooded. Not all aquatic plants can grow emersed, for example Val's are strictly aquatic and dry up out of the water. It is important to note though, although there is no water it is very important to have high humidity, hence the condensation but not too much or algae can grow. The reason why people grow them this way is to take advantage of the C02, which is basically unlimited, in the air. And they grow faster. Hope that helps.

Sorry guys. I haven't updated this thread in a year or so...ever since hurricane sandy. well the 20L was destroyed in the storm as were the plants. good new is I started new set up with a 10 gallon. originally I had my old pc light on this, growth was decent. I got a finnex ray 2 and the plant growth exploded!. set up is a little different. I just have a plastic containers and pots with plants. I have an idea on how to make it more efficient. right now the plants grew all mixed ion with each other. I want to separate the plants at some point with dividers... but well see I kind of like the way it looks right now. I actually pull some crypts so there is a little bare spot...
see if you can guess what plants are growing in there... thanks for looking!
