That's quite a drive considering they're not close to each other.
I'm live about less than 10 miles drive to AF and Rt 4, AF being much closer. Though I usually end up hitting up the NYC LFS whenever I'm visiting because they're usually a few bucks cheaper or more.
Each of the shops felt like they were approximately 10 min or so in-between. Add about three min each to recheck my google printed maps. All in all, WHAT A THRILL today! Perks at each stop.
LOL, me and Heartnet were just discussing going out there for all those! Haha. I'm glad you sharing feedback, thank you!
There was one other that I considered but it really wasn't aligned enough to include, Fishtown on route 17.
Ridgewood Aquarium Imports (the Ada shop) really makes premium planted tanks within reach. They carry all the soils in stock and tons of accessories including their do aqua line of glass tanks, diffusors, etc... They even had generic diffusors from hong kong starting at a dollar. Their plant selection was more exotic than standard faire and I did end up getting a plant there. Hey have a side by side tanks born at the same time showing with and without co2. You really can see the impact... Night and day folks....
They also have ADA and DoAqua! rimless tanks in stock. Its like planted tank pr0n there!
Plants and livestock room:
The aquarium on route 4 caters to everything on a large scale... They even have real pirañas. My gosh... My daughter was gaga over the baby bull dogs and the large tortoise. I admired their quality cpos, Sulawesi cardinals and another banded type which was unlabelled.
I really thought hard about picking up a few cpo but eventually trekked on to the next and last stop.
Absolutely Fish is always a treat... I've done Midnight madness there in the past. Their last one was in August. Plants are top notch, wide variety of products, ferts, crypts, foods etc... Large selection of nano sized stones in the back along with an aisle of nano fish. Cpds, rasboras briggeta (Sp?),kilis, blue velvet shrimp, rilis were all fabulous.
OK so i returned to Queens, specifically Elmhurst.
Golden Aquatic Aquarium in Woodside was a stark contrast to the earlier LFS. There isnt much to see. They are big on flowerhorns and have a several species of silver dollars and goldfish. A permanent fixture on all my trips there has been a stroller with a sleeping kid. I dare say its always the same kid. He's badly outgrowing the stroller these days with arms and legs dangling over the sides... Poor thing...
The day was wrapped up with a stop by Blue Gold Aquarium by Whitney Ave in Elmhurst. It broke my heart to see bettas being packaged in snack sized baggies. All fins clenched, gasping for air in bags awkwardly stacked in a large trash bin. Their noteworthy tank writing states: Extra red cherry shrimp $3, no picking, moss not for sale, don't ask. They did have a tank of discus at half off but avoid as all seem to be blind in one or both eyes. Truly a shame to witness.
Sorry to say, the Elmhurst LFS doesnt have much to offer this week....
Anyways, the nj tour can easily be managed under three hours Round trip. I'd recommend it. If I didn't have to work half the day, One or two more lfs wouls have been added...
