Very well said felt like I was reading a very well written and thought out speech! But Amen to that! cant say im warm and fuzzy either so if I say something someone doesn't like, then its probably because I wasn't intending to be rude just my way of life! But I am usually a very nice person!

I edit my responses to note that I'm a bumbling buffoon from time to time. There have been some occasions where I drop the tag "if I remember correctly" and I, in fact, did not remember correctly.

Feel like this thread went into this cycle...

-At first was about how the forum could be improved
-then the forum apparently Sucked all the sudden?
-After that people got arguing
-Then Happiness on the forum finally returned
-And then it was a cry baby scene since someone left
-And now I have to say this... you all will hate me.. -> This used to be an active thread? What happened? (lol)

WOW! Learned alot from this

Hey there

So I read over this thread, okay so maybe more like skimmed through, and I have to say that I am a bit taken aback!

I recently (yesterday) joined this forum because as I mentioned in my intro post I am frequently directed to this site when I search for info and I am starting up a 90 gal tank. The knowledge I have gained from this forum has so far been invaluable and I want to say thank you to all of you experts out there for taking time to answer questions and post new ideas etc...

As an aside, I never join forums ...ever.

I was looking forward to joining in on some great discussions and sharing my progress, getting some feedback on ideas and possibly helping others if I can.
Now reading this I am not so sure this is the place I want to be?
So far my experience has been meh,
I made my intro and lots of people checked it out but did not even take the time to say hello.
Not very welcoming and with forums if you are not going to say hi and just ignore me then I will probably just not bother anymore and only hop on to leach your information and ideas. Which is one of the complaints that I read.

Perhaps if there was an effort made to make newcomers feel welcome then this site might start to feel fresh again with ideas and experiments that you are missing out on because of your apparent disinterest.
I know I won't bother to post anything of interest if no one is going to take the time to respond. A conversation doesn't work if only 1 person is talking.
I am completely new to this hobby and very adventurous and maybe I will do something super cool and just keep it all to myself.

I can see that there is a lot of politicking going on and hopefully you will take what I have said as just an honest opinion form someone who is coming in from the outside and not get all upset and kick me out, but instead accept the constructive criticism and maybe stop to take the time to show an interest in new people coming in so that they stay and help to make this site the diverse dynamic and interesting place you want it to be.

Either way I am going to enjoy my new adventure and if you want to follow along let me know.

Cheers

S.

This type of forums is great for keeping information in an organized manner. That's the main reason I am here, but it looks like everyone is moving to Facebook groups because they are more active but the dynamic is different.
Facebook is a real threat to forums like this now, because they are getting to the point where their groups platform could replace them quite well.
Now, it is up to us to keep this group alive and active so it doesn't die off because of people migrating to Facebook groups. I am very active in a few planted, shrimp and fish related groups and I hope I won't end up giving up on this forum.

Link your journal in your signature. I usually go check out people's journals who comment on mine. It's an old habit from forums of yesteryear where you would comment for a returned comment. Anyway, there's only so much time in the day. I usually check the new posts tab regularly but NEVER go to any of the introduction threads. Just my preference, but saying "Hi" doesn't mean much to me. Steve did say it well though, give it some time. A couple days without recognition shouldn't ruin the hobby for you. If you want my crusty, uninformed, guess on anything, shoot me a PM.

See? And we have helped some one learn a trick!

Don't worry I will still post here I just found the thread interesting and relevant and threw in my two cents.

But thanks for responding!

I guess I could drop my opinion in at this point. I'm totally guilty of not checking the intro section. Just never really occurred to me that it would seem unfriendly, etc. Kind of like walking into a room and making an announcement of being there? I just go in with the idea that I will drift around and see how it goes. No big deal either way. Sometimes when I walked into a bar, I had to hang out for a while before somebody said "Hi", other times, I left and was glad nobody had noticed me!
I see the drop off in forum activity as a direct result of the toxic environment created around the US elections. I had to almost pick and choose who to speak to on my street for a time! It may be easing a bit in some places but then it doesn't take long to find those folks who are ready to fight. Folks who really don't give a hoot one way or the other are now feeling threatened or empowered to threaten others.
None of that makes good sense, either in forums nor in the real world. I've changed my location on my login to avoid being pegged to the former location.
