I would be willing to get a bigger tank, the only thing is there is NO WAY I can convince my parents to let me get anything bigger than a 55 gallon. And also, the costs would be higher and I only have a total of 2.5 feet space for the tank depth wise. I worked out my room after I redo it and I have plenty of space length wise but only 2.5 feet depth. And by mated pair of discus what do you mean? And also I can't really afford to grown discus. My LFS said when they have them in the small ones are about $25. Now I don't know if this meant small adult or just juvis, but if I were to put the juvies in the planted tank and were perform 10-20 percent water changes a day what would happen? Also I just read Simply Discus. It said for discus a 50 gallon tank is fine. I'm confused

EDIT: How about a 50 gallon tank? What would be better the shorter but deeper 50 gallon or the longer but not as deep 55 gallon?
