With the generosity of one of their members, RocketEngineer, many of the guys over at Reefcentral use the following template and design with great success, and is adaptable to aquariums of all shapes and sizes. It looks to be a much simpler design and easier to do, and all sorts of engineers and nerds have done the math up and down on the thread and have thoroughly tested it. I'll be building my own stand soon enough following it, for my soon to be 38g planted tank, and eventually a 180g+ reef.
Hope this helps in some way, please don't just look at the picture and dismiss it, I suggest reading alot of the comments and seek some of the pictures later on in the thread. The math and such gets interesting on page 2? I think.
