I've never had a puffer, and have heard mixed things.

I've got a GBR and it is very hardy. Water parameters went all over during my attack of hair algae and it lived through overdoses of excel. It is however, a very very very skitish fish. Only see the guy at feeding time or if i tip-toe into the room. If you have a large enough tank with less hiding spots than GBR's, you'll see them.
