Is there a lot of plant decay in the tank. Typically it's direct sunlight or high phosphates that get the water volume algae going. I havnt dealt with it since 1998, but then it was a mixture of the both. A phosphate buffer in the filter, and a UV got rid of it in a few days.
As far as my shrimp go i had a issue with keeping pumpkins alive for awhile. Only when i stopped treating the water with water changes, and did less did less water changes, the problems keeping them alive stopped. Never had a problems with my amano's either route, but pumpkins yes. I stopped treating my water the 1st of September, and no deaths since. I was in Arlington Heights prior to sept 1st, now i'm down in Humarock whether or not that made the difference i dont know. TDS was 197 last night
