Old Orchard Aquarium in Skokie is amazing, but about 45 minutes away. You could try Aquatic Visions on rt. 59, but it has a bad reputation. The Petsmart in Bolingbrook (by the old Borders and Office Depot/Office Max) actually has pretty healthy fish, too.

Honestly pet smarts packaged plants aren't terrible and most all I have gotten have taken off. The brand "Topfin" Staurogyne Repens and Labella Cardinalis took off and the former carpets my entire 55g at this point.

Still I like exploring and recommend "new fish" in Chicago (usually has a 75g stocked with plants and a couple mosses), Old Town Aquarium in Chicago, and Oak Park Natural Fish and Pet in Oak Park.

Old town is by far the best and they get very unique freshwater fish and a boat load of new plants every Friday (def. the day to go). If you call in on a Saturday/Sunday, most the pros are working and will let you know what's up (some know all the latin names and everything) if you have something specific in mind. The unique freshwater fish go quick, and the staff or their friends/clients usually snatch anything cool within a day or two. Super expensive, but you basically get a free consultation if you go in on a weekend.

went to all (most) of the sore in the west subs.
plantwise - forget it. best you can get is something from petsmart (which is not bad btw). Else, either over priced, or low quality, or nothing special for outrageous prices.
Still did not get a chance to go at north side, but people say it is worth driving. For plants, just drop a post here at TPT and you most likely will find somebody who has something for you to pick up, and for good price too.

fishwise - depends what you want, but most of the places have decent fish. chain stores are little bit tricky, since mostly they have a whole house filtration system, so if something is wrong, then the infection is in all tanks. A non-chain that runs individual filtration on each tank (most of them) will be fine. Quarantine is a good thing to do, of course.
